The Breeders Portland Concert reviews
I couldn't stop laughing!
HoB opened the doors early that evening because it rained, which was nice. Levi MacDougall began his set a little after 8pm, and the show started. He plateaued early on, so it seemed like he never reached his full potential, but he started out strong. His energy just never peaked, but he had some solid jokes. I was slightly disappointed that he was a former writer for Important Things with The Breeders and didn't have more hard-hitting jokes.
The Breeders burst into cheers when they followed Levi's performance, and of course, the room. He probably still would have gotten never-ending applause even if he could have stood still for the entire set! He told a few stories, made a few jokes, and then pulled out the easel to do his game Good, Bad, Interesting. He did a little more of his regular stand-up before grabbing his guitar and harmonica, and that was hilarious, as usual. You will recognize maybe a handful of jokes if you have listened to his recorded shows. He has adjusted a couple to make semi-new material and left some as classics. His performance was close to an hour, and it was satisfying, but of course, you could watch him all night and never get tired of laughing!
There wasn't the same aftershow chaos as you normally have with music artists, so maybe 10 others outside waited with my friends and me by the door The Breeders would exit from. Luckily, we only had to wait about 10-15 minutes for The Breeders to come outside. He was very sweet and very meek compared to his onstage presence. He was extremely patient and made sure to let everyone get their photos and autographs. I first just took a photo with him but hurried myself out of consideration for him and the other fans. He stopped me as I walked away, shook my hand, and asked my name. That was such an amazing gesture, as he could have easily just moved on to the next person. He included my name beside his signature, and that's when my friends went next, and I remembered that I never got his autograph. He's the epitome of what every celebrity should be when doing meet-and-greets- no outrageous VIP prices, no herding fans like cattle, just a nice guy taking the time to appreciate each individual fan.
If you're a fan of his comedy, I would definitely recommend seeing this show! One word of caution: If you're planning on bringing children/teens to the show, you will hear quite a few f-bombs from The Breeders. He doesn't really make obscene jokes, but he doesn't hold back the dirty words.
